Are you doing incremental or selective backup ?

You should be able to force the root to be backed up (it should work for
incremental) by doing:

                dsmc sel /filesys1/* -volinfo -dirsonly

I know that this works on NT but I can't verify whether or not it works on
Unix. I also know that there is a problem on NT with backing up root
permissions with incremental backup after the initial incremental but this
problem is very specific
to NT and it would be sheer coincidence if the same problem existed on Unix (if
it did it would be for different reasons).

Hope this helps .....

Thanks Pete, but I tried what you suggested and (at least on AIX) I had no
luck. Perhaps I should try to better explain the problem:

Assume I have two filesystems /filesys1 and /filesys1/filesys2.

When I try to restore these filesystems from ADSM I want the ownership and
permission settings of the directories /filesys1 and /filesys1/filesys2 to
be restored correctly, however I can't seem to figure out how.

It appears that the problem is caused because the root (or top-most)
directory of a file space never actually gets backed up!
The backup of /filesys1 never mentions "/filesys1" as being backed up, and
it skips /filesys1/filesys2 because it is a separate file space.
If you try to do a selective backup of a regular directory, it works, but
if you try to do the same thing with a file space root directory (eg: dsmc
selective /filesys1) you get the error "ANS1081E Invalid search file
specification '/filesys1' entered".

Probably because they are never backed up, they also can never be restored!
I personally feel that this is a bug.

Does anyone else have any comments or experiences? Give it a try for
yourselves. Change the permissions on /home and then try to restore them.
I don't think it is possible.

Thanks,
