But this still doesn't address the "big" disaster very well.  What happens
if the original system is gonzo?  The hardware on the new system is
undoubtedly different than the old system.

Your disaster recovery plan had better be very application oriented and not
system oriented to help solve this problem.  In a disaster, getting systems
to work again isn't the goal.  Getting business critical applications
running is.
