There is an easier, very flexible way of doing this but you need to
spend a little time setting it up.

I have used a webserver on the ADSM box (AIX) and Internet explorer 4's
Channel definition format along with CGI scripting on the Unix box to
embed constantly updating HTML pages into an NT boxe's desktop that
alerted me to various occurences within ADSM.

From concept to workable version it took me two days, it wasnt pretty
but it worked, and over the next month or so became extremely useful,
and pretty.

It is extremely customizable, and anything you can get out of ADSM with
Unix scripting / C code can be used as the basis for the information
sent to the NT desktop.
Also, the functionality is not restricted to monitoring ADSM. Anything
can be monitored, so long as the information needing monitoring can be
obtained using CGI programs, wich are just scripts etc. running on the
Unix box.

If I ever had the choice and the time to develop it, I would rather use
this method than an SNMP product like Tivoli or Netview.

It is also easily possible to get the CGI scripts to generate buttons on
the HTML pages dynamically to perform actions to correct reported
problems, as the CGI scripts can execute commands as they would be
entered on the command line.

I also feel that maybe, due to the web and its platform independent
interface, that remote monitoring applications may move to this kind of
approach anyway.

Has anyone else tried anyhting similar, or as a long shot, interested in
attempting to develop something along these lines on a larger scale?
