I am unsure of what you mean by compat mode.
We have 3590 drives in a 3494 on a MVS system. In our system they have
a generic name of 3590-1 and an esoteric name of CARTJ. In ADSM we then
have defined a device class for them using 3590 as the device type and
CARTJ as the unit name.
