Leonard, I need to correct some things I told you at SHARE last week.

Regarding this inactive restore performance improvement, you should see
improvements
even when using the -subdir option. (See APAR PQ05614). But this fix is NOT
in the
recently released VM PTF which is server level 17. The change is in server
level 18.
We are just finishing up test on V2 PTF 18 for the AIX servers. The change
will also be seen
in the first V3 PTF.

Anyway, when you do see this fix, here are some numbers I saw:
I backed up 5000 tiny files twice, so I have an active and inactive version of
all 5000 files.

Here is what I saw when restoring all 5000 files.

Old code New code
rest e:\test\* -ina -subdir=y 102 secs 87
secs
rest e:\test\* -ina -subdir=n 90 secs 75
secs

Here is what I saw when restoring one file.

Old code New code
rest e:\test\0001 -pick -subdir=n -ina 23 secs <1
sec
rest e:\test\0001 -pick -subdir=y -ina 35 secs 12
secs

So you should see improvements even when using the subdir option.
Your mileage will of course vary depending on how many files are in the
filespace,
how many inactive versions, etc., disclaimer, etc.
