You have run into a 'broken as designed' issue which is
fixed in the version 3 client.  What is happening is that
the client is getting information about the entire tree from
the server and building the tree before displaying anything.
In v3, the client displays a collapsed tree and only gets
info from the server as you expand the tree.

If you can't move up to the version 3 client soon, and there
are issues with it, be sure your users are selecting just
the filespace they want if they have multiple filespaces,
and are not asking for inactive files if they don't need to.
