If it reported not being able to read the barcode, that's pretty much what it
means.  You can use other utilities such as lbtest in the adsm directory to
play with it to try to verify this.  Use the lbtest option to audit the library
with barcode.

On the timeout, it is imperative that you have the correct element on the
DEFINE DRIVE command associated with each /dev/mtX file.  Otherwise, the
volumes are loaded into the wrong drive, and the right drive times out.
