You're close. It should work with the drive in Random mode. In that
mode, dsmlabel's library and search commands should be able to pick the
tapes one at a time for labeling.
dsmlabel -drive=/dev/rmt0,16 -library=/dev/rmt0.smc -search
If you have a file of labels, you can redirect it to the command with <
rather than manually typing each label.
