CPU penalty is widely variable.  You should test a backup doing it both
ways.  If it's faster with compression then compress.  If not, don't!

For your tests, I would recommend doing a selective backup of a directory
or directory tree.  In this fashion, you will be backing up the same amount
and the same data compressed and uncompressed.
