Julie,
After a suggestiong from someone on the listserv, I entered the search
string in single quotes without the brackets and it worked.  Here's what
I did:
q backup -scroll=yes -fromdate=10/31/1997 -todate=11/4/1997 -subdir=yes
"d:\public\7th grade humanities\*"
