Most tape drives compress data.  This is actually preferrable to doing the 
compression on the client before shipping it to the server (unless your network 
is very overloaded and your clients very fast).  Hardware compression is 
generally more efficient than software compression.

I guess the correct answer to your question is "yes" ADSM stores the data 
uncompressed, but the tape hardware compresses it.
