I have done some interesting tests on AIX and Sun and to my surprise, =
there are some problems with symbolic linking on (at least) these two =
platforms.
I do not know if any of you have already experienced this problem, but =
anyway, let me tell you:
Suppose you have a filesystem like /tmp/tst and you create another =
directory "b" and a symbolic link "a" pointing to b :
# pwd
/tmp/tst
# mkdir b
# echo > b/testfile *** create something ***
# ln -s /tmp/tst/b a
Now you have "a" poiting to directory "b" (a -> /tmp/tst/b) and =
everything that is on b can be accessed by the link (and vice versa).
If you issue the command "dsmc sel /tmp/* -subdir=3Dyes", ADSM will =
treat "a" as a true link (i.e., it will back it up as a LINK).
The Problem: IF YOU ISSUE THE COMMAND "dsmc sel /tmp/tst/a/testfile" THE =
ADSM SERVER WILL BACKUP /TMP/TST/A AS A DIRECTORY (INSTEAD OF A SYMBOLIC =
LINK).
It seems that when running the backup command with subdir=3Dyes, ADSM =
has the opportunity of "checking the file type". ADSM does not seem to =
check if any "path" component is a symbolic, and thus, it works =
different depending on the level of information where the symbolic link =
is.
I would like to know if any of you have already faced the same problem. =
I have asked IBM to check this problem and they said they are going to =
build a PTF for it (IBM/customer-order 12.834). So how many of you have =
this problem TODAY? Please send your comments to your IBM representative =
and ask them to work this out quickly! The impact on production backup =
may be very serious and it affects at least the two platforms that I =
have tested!
Thank you for your attention.
Regards,

PS: If you wish to send any comments to me, please send an e-mail. I am =
not in ADSM-L any more. (My service provider told me ADSM was filling =
their filesystems and he would need a backup solution/HSM to overcome =
the problem ..... :) (Ooops).
