ADSM does not use tapes in storage pools as a "recycle" type of operation -
that is write to one tape on Monday, another on Tuesday, etc. Instead, it
will write to one tape until it is full, then move on to another. While your
Policy domain statements might appear on the surface to have a life of one
week, this is not in fact true, because the rules you show only apply to
inactive copies of backups. ADSM will always keep a copy of an active file
on the client, and will not back it up repeatedly (why back up something
again that hasn't changed?). So in reality, the first tapes in your pool
will contain a lot of static files that do not change. For a desktop client
(Windows, etc.) probably 90% of the files will not change. On a LAN server
(NT, Novell), that figure is probably much lower.
Those files that do change, of course, will be backed up, and the older
copies of the files will be deleted according to your rules. This will cause
the amount of active data on the tape, but since tape is a sequential media,
the space created by these deletions cannot be reused. Eventually, as the
amount of active data drops below the migration threshold, the tape will be
reclaimed - that is the still active data will be copied over to a new
volume, and the old one returned to scratch status.

When we excute the command 'q vol' we can see that every weekday for
example monday, ADSM appends it's data to the monday tape and after
a while these tapes are all 100% filled .
Normally we define a copygroup that has a retain of 6 days :
ANS5101I Server command: 'q copygroup'
Policy Policy Mgmt Copy Versions Versions Retain Retain
Domain Set Name Class Group Data Data Extra Only
Name Name Name Exists Deleted Versions Version
------ --------- ------ ----- -------- -------- -------- -------
POL1 ACTIVE DAILY_MG STANDARD 4 4 6 6
POL1 ACTIVE DAILY_MG STANDARD 4 4 6 6
POL1 POL1_POL DAILY_MG STANDARD 4 4 6 6
Does anybody knows why ADSM don't make this tape every monday
empty ?
Thanks for any help
