Following is a situation forwarded to me. I'm wondering whether anyone else
has seen this, or if any of the ADSM people might like to comment.

I assume that the "compression" refers to compressing files to the disk on
off hours, as opposed to decompressing them prior to sending to the ADSM
server.

We'd appreciate any comments.

SYMPTOM

Customer applied ADSM to a Pentium class machine running NetWare
4.11 for nightly backups. Every night at 12:30am, the server
would hang and crash shortly after the backup began. Customer
had applied all the latest patches for NetWare 4.11, including
the new clib and server would still crash nightly just after
backup had started.

We found that when we ran the backup operation during the day,
utilization would jump to 100% and after 10 minutes or so the
server would hang and crash.

SOLUTION

ADSM is a very high utilization process. Customer also had
netware compression operational and this too is a high
utilization process. Suggested to customer to turn off
compression when ADSM is backing up. Once customer did this, the
backup was able to perform and complete the operation.

We found this to be true only for Pentium class machines.
Pentium Pro machine seems to be able to handle the load.
