Network Data Management Protocol
1997-04-14 12:03:49
Dear Fellow-ADSM-ers,
I was recently pointed to a vendors' and users' initiative targeted to
create a vendor-independent standard protocol for network-based backup.
Quoted from http://www.ndmp.org/summary.html :
The purpose of this protocol is to allow a backup of a host
without requiring a full port of the backup software product.
The backup and restore solution is partitioned in a way that
minimizes the amount of software required on the host with the
tape drive attached.
With the emergence of file server products runnning specialized,
non-general-purpose operating systems, the need for such a
standardized interface increases.
I would like to solicit comments by other users and ADSM development
whether this is perceived as a widespread and important need and if
there are considerations to integrate this protocol into IBM's storage
management product suite.
Sincerely, Michael Fink
