I made the same observations, plus the HP-UX client recovered the
symbolic links correctly.

I think that ADSM should not follow symbolic links by default.
If some users, for instance, create symbolic links from /usr/lib
to $HOME/lib (this makes no sense, but users have the strangest
ideas), you will get some serious trouble if ADSM follows these
links. And if the users create some chain links that point back
to a parent directory, your backup will take a looong time,
because ADMS backs up each file twice.
