Hi,

After installing PTF 12 on one of our servers last week, we have had a
number of problems occur. The server now seems to be stable. However, I
thought that by putting some of the details here, I might save some of you
some grief.

I'm told by IBM that an APAR has been opened for this problem (sorry, I
don't have the number but it was apparently opened on the 6th February). I
would have hoped that IBM would have at least issued a warning about these
problems through this list by now. They haven't, so I will.

First some configuration details. We had been running ADSM 2.1.5.11 on a
dual processor R40 running AIX 4.1.4 with 256mb memory, and 3494 with 2
3590s. The server is dedicated to ADSM.

The first problem that we noticed after installing 2.1.5.12 was that we
could not restart the server. We received an error saying 'insufficient
memory available'. Through trial and error, we managed to get the server
going again by reducing BUFFPOOLSIZE (from 18384 to 8192) and LOGPOOLSIZE
(from 2048 to 1024). However, the server failed again that
night once our backups started. We are now running with BUFFPOOLSIZE set to
2048 and LOGPOOLSIZE set to 512. Since then, we have had one further
failure under heavy load. That time the server process continued to run,
but no clients (backup and admin.) received any response from the server.

I've read other entries on from this list which seem to suggest that others
have gone to PTF12 with few problems. So
obviously the problems that we are having are not that widely spread. But
my advice would be to be cautious with
upgrading.

For those of you who have installed PTF 12, I would be interested in
hearing your experiences.

regards,

Trevor
