We experienced a similar situation when we restored NT 3.51 workstation. We
encountered an error restoring the directory with the REGREST command error
that indicated that the user profile key restore failed. After we restored
the hard drives in the workstation (as ADMINISTRATOR), the user logged on to
find that his client desktop had not been restored. We then did a selective
registry restore of the user profile key (logged on with the user's ID):
DSMC REGREST USER.
After this command completed successfully, we rebooted and the client desktop
had been restored to its previous state. This restore was for a single
client workstation running the Win32 2.1.05 client.
