Here are some tricks to use...
     1) to max out backups look into running as many concurrent sessions as
the client can handle... how could you schedule this...? We have (on
machines with backup time limitations) scheduled events of commands
that initiate a seperate dsmc incremental some_sub_domain... example
would be our Novell servers... out adsm_server scheduled event runs a
command on the novell server called nightly... and nightly does a
bunch of LOAD DSMC INCREMENTAL filesystemx (where filesystemx would
be SYS: or APPS: or DATAblah: ) they take the number of file systems
and divide it by 6 because we have found 6 concurrent dsmc processes
pretty well pegs the netframe novell servers...
     2) Open System Adapter connectivity rather than the 3172...
the open sys adapter is a whole new monster... look into it.

I think you can get it with your NT's depending on what box NT is
running on... THAT IS THROUGH AN "OPEN SYSTEM ADAPTER"...
right now we have 3 production adsm's running under AIX on RS/6000's
(1-R40, 1-591, and 1-59H)... we have 1 production adsm running on MVS,
and are a very short time away from 2 more AIX and 1 more MVS ADSM
servers... (AAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH) our existing servers get hit
with between 20 GB and 200 GB daily each depending on how busy their
clients are... and I need to check into a few things because the other
day I came in and had a bunch of backups in device waits... well, it
was because the 160 GB disk pool was full and all the tapes were
busy... and one migration process showed it had moved 150+GB and
another listed it had moved 200+GB (I don't remember what the others
said) and we empty the disk pool to tape daily.... I think every
client changed every file over the weekend... SIGH

     Have Fun,
     later,
           Dwight

I am just setting up an MVS ADSM Server to test backing up various Novell,
Unix and NT systems. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with a
similar environment as to what kind of through put they are getting. Our
initial goal is to be able to backup 50Gb of data stored on an NT v4 server
in less than 12 hours. Is this feasible, or am I wasting my time trying.

Our environment is MVS 5.2.2 with TCP/IP 3.1 and ADSM v2r1. We have an
ESCON attached 3172-003 (running new IP Channel comm, not offload)
currently with a 10Mbit/s Ethernet interface. We expect to be replacing
the ethernet card with a new ATM (155Mbit/s) interface. We are also
planning on ESCON attached 3490E type tape drives.

Any information would be appreciated.
