Karl,
        Two things you can try...

1) If you have the Disaster Recovery Manager feature, use SET
DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS

2) If you don't have DRM, I believe you can use DELETE VOLHISTORY to
expire old database backups.  According to the ADSM V2 Admin Manual,
when the DELETE VOLHISTORY command removes volume information for db
dumps, db backups, or export volumes, the volumes are automatically
returned to scratch status if they reside in automated libraries.
