Quoting from the v2 OS/2 User's Guide, page 30:

 "Because the file formats used on DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows NT, and OS/2
  are compatible, you can restore or retrieve files from one type of system
  to one of the other types of system.  This is called cross-client restore."

I don't know why the support center would tell you that what you were
doing was unsupported.  There are limitations documented further on in
this section of the User's Guide, but none I saw that relate to what you
are attempting to do.
