To detect errors such as you've described, you would have to check the 
dsmsched.log
on the client side. I don't know exactly why, but some file backup errors will
cause the client to post a failure indication to the server and others do not.
So I ended up just checking all the clients' schedule logs to determine if any
errors had occured by looking for certain error message numbers.
