If anyone has any experience with an NDS Recovery of a Netware 4.x
server, please read this and see if you can help us out.

Thanks.

0 for 2 on recovering a single NDS Container and the objects it
contains. Limited success (see below) but we need to get some advice
from the User Group.

Progress to date. (These steps were completed over two days to allow
for NDS replications etc. in between each delete / restore stage.)

Backed up the container .OU=ADSM.ISS.AKLD.CLEAR (to use ADSM's syntax)
using the following command syntax - SEL DIR/.OU=ADSM.ISS.AKLD.CLEAR

Verified the backup using QUERY BACKUP (Had to use a different syntax !)

Deleted the ADSM container and its objects using NWADMIN.

Re-verified the backup objects were present using QUERY BACKUP.
Interestingly enough I had to use the -INA switch because the backup
files had been marked inactive. This was a result of the subsequent
scheduled INCR backup I believe.

Attempted a restore using the following command RES -LA
DIR/.OU=ADSM.ISS.AKLD.CLEAR which resulted in 3 error messages, one for
each object in the ADSM container. The message basically said the
object could not be restored until the Parent container had been
restored.

Manually created the parent container and re ran the restore command.
SUCCEESS - all 3 objects and their properties were restored.

I have tried several different methods of restoring the parent
container, both by itself and together with It's objects but with no
luck. I have read the ADSM Manual and the document we got from the ftp
site, but the examples they give imply what we are doing should work. I
do note however that in the examples given in the manual for the backup
and recover of a single container the syntax given is
directory/.o=container_name .O is the wrong typeful prefix for a
container unless it is an Organisational container. In practice I have
had to use .OU followed by a full NDS path (e.g.
.OU=ADSM.ISS.AKLD.CLEAR)

I may be doing something wrong (incorrect / missing switches) when I run
the backup command but I would have imagined that the syntax I used
would backup both the parent container identified and the objects
contained within. Likewise when the reciprocal restore command was used
I would have imagined that the parent container would be restored at the
same time.

If the restore is a two stage process then I need to know how to bring
back the parent containers.

HELP !

Thanks

Peter
