separate tapes tied to what?

I'm sending both copies of my Oracle backups to 3590s in a
3494.  What piece of ADSM ensures they end up on separate
tapes: multiple stg pools pointing to multiple device classes, or
could I have multiple stg pools pointing to a single device class
and still be sure they were on separate tapes?  Or what?
