I have a lot of experience with DLT drives on other platforms.

I ran into several situations where a batch of tapes worked fine after
the first full pass (and a few cleaning tape passes).

You will normally get no errors on a DLT tape and they have a very
good lifetime for number of passes.  It's just that first pass that
can scare you.
