Good question... BUT are you really going to be backing up an
individual's pc ? Here at AMOCO we all have our PC's on our desktops
as part of our distributed environment BUT...for a user's data to be
backed up we require that they store it out on the attached server.
THIS ALSO REDUCES LICENSING COSTS ! (sorry IBM) There are numerous
ways to set up networks but here is a misc example...
Say the company decides that DOS, WINDOWS, some OFFICE pkg, & some
MAIL pkg is the minium that workers need to perform their duties. In
keeping life simple these go on with no bells & whistles. So if a
disk goes bad in a machine it is a no-brain'er for someone to restore
their "BASE" work environment. BUT you will always have those few,
like myself, who say "Hey, but I also need blah, blah, & blah!" Well,
if I install the nonstandard packages to directories mapped to the
server then all I have to do is also stick my configuration files out
on the server and everything is recoverable in a heart beat. That is I
crash my hard drive... service tech comes in, replaces it, and plops
on the base software. I then copy my autoexec.bat config.sys win.ini,
etc, etc, etc from my base directory on the server and ba-boom-baby,
I'm up and running again. Then I have also been using a dir on the
server to save all my *.xls, *.doc, *.blah to so I didn't have to
     worry about those.

Ok, that doesn't fit your needs, option/2... if every pc has a
predefined internet id (ip addr) use the host & part of the domain...
ie. if I'm 111.222.333.444 my drives would be 333-444C 333-444D
     333-444E and so on

Ok, you don't like that one either... Humm ;-) say people have a
logon id... dcook then my drives would be dcookC (or D or E )

Try to fix them to something already in place that will carry through
the business... we tie all our pc poop back to a/the userid... then
when I'm at the office the machine on my desk has node name myuserid
then when I go home and dial in with the at home pc, boom same node
name (different ip address) or when I'm in another state with my lap
top, I dial in, boom same node name...all of my poop is on the server.

Thing to remember is pick a method and stick with it because it will
be a bear to change things later if many PC's are involved...

     later
         Dwight

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but our site has been
having discussions about the best scheme to use for volume labels
on Windows and OS/2 clients. We were wondering what other sites
do. If you e-mail me directly, I'll summarize the responses and
post them for all to see.

Things that we wondered about:

o Do you have a scheme to predetermine what a volume label should be?

o How do you handle PCs with multiple partitions or drives?

o When a user's PC is upgraded, do you use the same vol label on the
new PC or assign a different one?
