 Dirk,
  This is a limitation in all version 1 servers.  It is fixed in version
2 servers.  However, you can get around it with a admin mount client.
This client only receives "mount type" messages.  It's output can be
a piped to another program or cmd file to handle situations like this.
You could wait for this message, run an admin client with macro to
make the tape volume available again, and prompt the operator to put
the tape back into the library.  The user would have to re-issue the
request, unfortunately.
  New messages are documented in the readme files and also in the
updated online help that ships with maintenance.
