There is an IBM technical bulletin that your IBM SE or marketing rep should be
able to get for you. It's by Ken Morse and covers the creation of boot diskettes
for OS/2 and ADSM. Disks 0 and 1 are the boot and TCP/IP diskettes, and disk 2
is the ADSM and miscellaneous utility diskette.

You can not use the V1 client to restore files backed up with the V2 client.
(However the V2 client can restore files backed up with V1).

As to how easy it is to restore: the answer is "it depends".

The simplest scenario is if you the machine you are restoring to is the same
machine as the one you backed up from, or an exact duplicate. Otherwise there
may be some problems because OS/2 is somewhat machine dependent, so the
operating system files you backed up on machine A may not work too well if
restored to machine B. If the two machines are different, you might want to
consider very carefully which files you choose to restore. Maybe it would be
easier to install OS/2, the comm package, and ADSM from scratch, then proceed
to restore your applications and data. BTW, this probably goes for almost any
ADSM client and any backup product.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to E-Mail me at

Message from Ronald Ritchey follows:

I'm looking at backing up an OS/2 machine and restoring it to another
machine. Do I need to use a boot disk to make sure all the OS/2 files
are closed or will adsm handle them? If my boot disk has version 1 of
adsm will it restore a machine backed up with the version 2 client? If
not, how do other people accomplish this?

Thanks for your response in advance...
