On our MVS server (release 1), we would like to manage the
storage pools via HSM rather set up storage pools on tape. The
reason is so that we don't need to have two series of tapes, one
for HSM and one for ADSM. We have set up two disk storage pools
for backup, one being the next level for the other, using an SMS
management class that does not do backups. Each storage pool
contains two storage volumes. Our hope was that when a volume
was filled up it would be moved to a lower level of storage and
eventually to tape by HSM if users did not need to restore
anything from it. ADSM appears to be accessing the storage
volumes on a daily basis, however. I imagine that is being done
in connection with the client file expiration process. If ADSM
is opening these files on a daily basis, they will never qualify
for movement to a lower level of storage. My question is whether
there is any way of avoiding having ADSM open storage volumes on
a regular basis, e.g. to have client file expiration done on a
demand basis rather than automatically. I would appreciate the
experiences anyone has had managing storage volumes in an MVS SMS
environment, particularly with regard to using HSM to manage the
storage volumes.

Thanks in advance.
