As you may know from my previous appends, we are in the process of moving our
VM-based ADSM service to AIX. I have most of the preliminary work done and
have begun testing the VM-based server export. Well.... I can confirm Wayne
Smith's earlier report here that the server export function is EXTREMELY slow.

Our first real test was to try an export of our locally managed nodes. This
involves 7 nodes, 2.7 Gigabytes of data, and 152,000 files. I started this
process about 22 hours ago, and it's about 40% finished - we've exported
about 60,000 files so far. The sort phase took about 5 elapsed hours.

Since these nodes comprise about 10% of our total data and files, I am somewhat
concerned about completing the server export before the millenium. I'd
 appreciate
any suggestions people might have as to how to minimize the elapsed time for
server export - (increase server buffer sizes, try multiple exports at the
same time?)

(IBM regularly recommends export as a disaster recovery tactic. It seems to
me that this suggestion is somewhat unreasonable, given the performance I'm
seeing - comments appreciated)

One tactic I want to avoid is leaving data behind - our customers (they pay
for this!) expect the inactive data to be there after we move the server.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We're running the VM server on a 9121-480 at release level 0.8/1.8.

Thanks,

MK
