That's the thing though... I know from testing the same drive in another system that it is perfectly capable of sustaining the throughput my tape drive needs. I use a Compaq SDLT-320 drive that maxes

All, I dug some more, and pulled the box out of the rack to hook up a VGA card (old box w/o built-in VGA or serial-redirection), and discovered that PCI bus-mastering was disabled for the IDE control

Try doing a "hdparm -d1 /dev/<whatever>" and test the throughput again. As long as it's doing DMA, the drive should work beautifully. Mike
