That, generally speaking, is not true. The compression that tape drives use is typically some form of RLL, and regular RLL encoder/decoder chips right in the drive can handle that without breaking a

Keep in the mind that the OP is using an Ultrium Drive. Those are actually smart enough to *not* hardware compress incompressible data. So, with those drives, you can actuall mix hardware and softwar
