Poor form to reply to my own post, but I couldn't sleep till I found a solution. Its nearly 4am now and I think I have one! Someone suggested directly to me that I could select from the backups table

I haven't tried the 5.5 "fromdate" and "todate", but assuming it works as advertised on exchange data, then I don't think there is a need for an alternate server. You can just export straight to tape
