We are looking at something for a bare metal restore functionality. Sort of what TSM had in 4.2 with BMR before Veritas bought them out.



The scenario would be a server dies, we put a special boot disk in, system restores itself, loads the TSM client and restores data from current backup. Thanks

Cristie captures all the system info, hardware, startup files etc. and writes it to a floppy or a share on another server, your choice. Then you back up the rest of the server to TSM. You use the system info to restart your broken server, then when it is up you restore the remainder of the files from TSM tapes/disks. Go to the web site and download the info on the product. We had one of their engineers from Sweden do a presentation and live demo to our TSM User's group meeting and the product is very nice and efficient. Did a recovery of a dead laptop in about 2 minutes.

I think Christie BMR is only used for the System partition. Is that right?



It's not like it can create an image of a data partition. Can it?

but why would you do that if TSM is there to do it better (incrémental...).



CBMR will backup your "c :" , and the TSM client full path, if it s installed on an other partition.





by the way , i Am having some troubles with the OFS modules with an bran new WIN2003 SP1. it just don t lunch.



is there an compatible problem with CBMR'S OFS and the SP1 of Win2003 ??

OFS is not supported in Win2k3. I just went though this the very hard way, and I am in fact still going through it. Finally a support call to IBM confirmed it. Be carefull when upgrading your Win 2k boxes to Win 2k3 without testing backups!



Why would I want to use Christie for an image? Because I have to Archive a Windows 2k3 cluster with over 5 million files on it, which has people accessing files on it 24 hrs a day. There is no down time for this cluster. There are access dbs, excel files, lotus notes archives, and much more on this server. TSM is having real issues trying to get an archive of this box. OFS is NOT supported on 2k3.



If Christie could rip an image off of the data drives, that I could save like an archive, without impacting my TSM database, my life would be so so so much better. Your saying it can, I've heard that it can't. Is anyone using Christie this way?

I just called Christie support and the person on the phone said that Christie can perform snapshots of data drives! That is good news. Not only that, I can download a trial version of the software. One thing I forgot to ask was, can Christie restore single files from an image?



And It is supported in Win2k3.

yes win2003 is supported, but does it work with the SP1 of Win2003 ??

I never tried, but i think u should do it with the manually restore option, but got to have a look.



and for informationn CBMR is backup by TSM as a unknown filesystem (Plateform),

If I use BMR with Critie, after my server down, I restore OS. My question is : does application software (such as : accounting, billing, outlook, Oracle, SQL software .... ) have to reinstall or configure again ? Can I use these applications or using TSM to restore database immediately ?

the system (registry....) is backup by CBMR, and all other datas has to be done by TSM.



So when a OS is restored,



tha worked in same fashion:



system (c$) is resored with CBMR (outlook, oracle...)



and



the datas are restored by TSM (databases, your profil)!



you get an option on CBMR to tell that only system files are to be backuped on C$ and all the rest by TSM (ntfs info...)

You’re suggesting that I perform an image backup of the data drives? That is exactly what I would like to do. I do not yet have Christie, but I am considering buying it right now. My current questions are:



1) Can I perform image backups of data drives? (We already said yes to this).

2) Can I perform single file restores from a Christie backup image? (This will need to be tested).

3) Can I run Christie in a Windows 2003 Cluster environment? (I need to find this out)

about your questions:



1) you can do an Imange backup of your logical partition of your disk (c$, d$, e$...)



2) Yes you can do single file restore via Cristie, but be ware that the NTFS infos are not bakcuped. there are but, backuped with TSM

==> the idea is to restore all your system needded files with CBMR and all your datas (files, binaries, ...) with TSM



3)about a cluster machin, I don't know, but nowaday i'am facng some troubles with SP1 of win2003

my CBMR version is 4.10b and it's look like that I need the 4.20.1 version to be able to use the OFM module.

my problen is that Cristie allow only ONE YEAR maintenance support, so they are telling me to rebuy another licenses. I have already bought some, and I really do not want re-pucharse some because I Update my system (Win2003 ==> SP1)
