Default TSM Client Communication to server

    Hi There

We have 2 clients say node1 and node2 and due to application issue on these servers we Wintel/application team has redirected node1 to node2 on DNS. I have put the entry in TSM server's host in the /etc/hosts as "TCP/IP node1" to make sure that it is going to node1 not node2. I have also put following extra entry in dsm.opt file as under: Is that enough ?

    NODENAME NODE1
    COMMMETHOD TCPIP
    TCPSERVERADDRESS server's TPC/IP
TCPCLIENTADDRESS Client TCP/IP * EXTRA ENTRY
    TCPPORT 1500
    TCPCLIENTPORT 1511
    TCPWINDOWSIZE 63
    TCPBUFFSIZE 32
    TCPNODELAY Yes
    HTTPPORT 1581

    DATEFORMAT 2
    MANAGEDSERVICES SCHEDULE WEBCLIENT
    PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE
    REPLACE PROMPT
    SCHEDMODE POLLING

If node 1 and node 2 are both backed up by the TSM server, then you will have conflicts and either node 1 gets backed up one day and node 2 gets backed up another day or one of the nodes don't get backed up at all.

I don't understand why the need for any DNS redirect. Backup is backup and is a 'necessary' evil regardless of what an application is.

To my knowledge you cannot have multiple stanzas in the dsm.opt file of a Windows TSM client, which is what I understood from your post that you did. If you have two TSM clients registered that use the same host you would need a separate dsm.opt and another set of services defined that pointed to the new dsm.opt file. Or at least reference the new dsm.opt when performing a manual backup.

TSM itself does not care about the IP address of a client, or its DNS record. So long as the client can contact the TSM server and TSM can talk back, all should be good.

If NODE1 and NODE2 happen to be two halves of a cluster and the application is a shared resource that runs on either of the hosts at any given time then you should set up your nodes as

NODE1 - backup of host 1 data, exclude the shared resource drive/folders
NODE2 - backup of host 2 data, exclude the shared resource drive/folders
SHARE - backup of the shared resource data (drive(s)/folder(s) only

But from the sounds of it you do not have a real MS cluster configuration.

    Hi rmazzon

I didn't made 2 stanzas ? Please check again. You are correct that It is not a cluster one but a temporary arrangement.

Hi Moon-Buddy. How can I check if both node's backups are fine or not ?

    Regards

The way you have it would not backup the two nodes. The last one that was started up will be the one that TSM backs up. If Node 1 masquerading as Node 2 started or was restarted later than Node 2, then Node 1 (as Node 2) will be backed up. Node 2 will never be backed up.

    Hi Moon-buddy

Both the nodes are up and running in use and I checked by "dsmc q backup" on both and it looks fine to me. Please confirm ?

    Thanks

They should have unique node names.
