Default SQL Restore - Unbearably Slow

    SQL TDP 5.5.5.0.

I'm doing a FULL restore of a production database into an existing development database on a different server. I've never done this so this is my first experience with it.

When it started, it was running well, at about 70MB/sec. It's a 300GB database and after 90GB it has gone into a crawl and over the last 12 hours, its only restored an additional 3GB, and the client progress shows this all night........

Any ideas what the problem could be? It's not tape mounts, as it's been restoring from the same tape all night.

I've killed it and started again, this time using the /REPLACE parameter. Within 25 minutes, it has already restored 130GB.

My next restore will be a DIFF, obviously without /REPLACE.

That FULL restore is done (70 minutes) and now I'm restoring the most recent DIFF, which is about 50GB. It did 35GB in 10 minutes and now has gone into a crawl again, doing very little. Same single tape. Is this normal?? This kills my FULL+DIFF strategy and I don't want to have to run a full backup of this database every day. It's pace right now is 15MB (yes megabytes) in 10 minutes. It will never complete at this rate.

I'm doing this again, restoring a FULL backup from a production SQL server to a test SQL server and it is absolutely CRAWLING. Started out a 50MB/sec, and continues to decline and isn't doing much of anything now. I just watched it take 5 minutes to restore 20 MB. This will never complete at this pace. It's a 400 GB DB and has done 21 GB in 34 minutes, but most of that was in the first 10 minutes.......

    Any ideas??

    Here's my command......

    tdpsqlc restore DB1 full /sqlserver=SERVER2\TEST_INSTANCE /fromsqlserver=SERVER1\PROD_INSTANCE /tsmoptfile=J:\TSM\TDPSql\dsm_SERVER1-db.opt /tsmpassword=xxxxxxxx /relocate=DB1 /to=J:\MSSQL\Data\DB1_TEST\DB1_TEST.mdf /into=DB1_TEST /recovery=yes /replace

Beginning full restore of backup object DB1, 1 of 1,
    to database DB1_TEST
