try vssadmin list writers for status

The quick way to fix most of these VSS errors is to reboot the server, which will reset the VSS writers to a good state. There are a number of hotfixes provided by Microsoft for VSS, I don't have them to hand but a search here will show a number of threads with them listed. If you continue to have errors after the reboot, check the patches.
