Default Oracle - Input on backing up 320gb / hour

    Hi folks.

I need some input/ideas/opinions on backing up a "max peak" of 320gb / hours of Archive logs for Oracle into TSM via RMAN.

We've been doing RMAN backups for ages but i never had the request to back up so much data! First of, my diskpool won't handle the load as it is only 300gb today with a tape pool as its next pool...

But i would need some throughput to handle 320gb of data into TSM per hour...

    Any thoughts?
and all that could have been...

    Some possible ways:

    1. Dedicated backbone - gigabit or better
    2. Bumped up resourceutilization values
    3. SAN Mirroring - backup later; RMAN not really needed

Thanks for the quick answer Ed.

Could LANFREE be used instead of a dedicated GIGA lan?

Sure and it would be the faster option depending on what your SAN fabric is running at, hopefullly at least 2Gb if not 4Gb or 8Gb

Yes - but you should be dedicating Tape Drives to realize your desired throughput. I suppose that there is enough data pumping out from the fiber link to sustain continuous tape write. This is important to avoid "shoe shining"

yeah that's the potential downfall here these being just archive logs via lanfree. Would want to have the devclass mountretention up high enough so they'd not be dismounting and mounting all the time. A VTL would really be nice to do lanfree archive logs in this case.

Either way a couple good different solutions can be used to resolve the problem.

    Thanks for the input.

The log files are 32gb in size. A VTL as mentionned would be a great asset i think but on such short notice, it is not possible.

My fabric is running on dual Brocade 48000 (4gb)...but i don't have a lanfree license.

If i were to configure something quickly to try to help at least solve the potential problem, i could what? Make sure i increase my disk stgpool for Oracle to handle the load, crank up RESOURCEUtilization? Dedicate a gb NIC for TSM only on the client? (can that be done?)

But even then, if the rate is sustained for a while of 300+gb/h, TSM will never have the time to migrate to tape...my primary diskpool will grow and grow and eventually bust

Would i be better off as mentionned to drop to tape directly?

    thanks.

All my large database backup are done directly to tape Exchange 3.2TB, SAP 1.3TB and Oracle RMAN 1.5TB (all have dedicated nic). I mostly hit an average of 280-330gb/h. I activate also the CopyStgPools during the backup for SAP cause I need to send it to the vault ASAP.

This save me time for the "copy storage groups" during morning!

Yes, unless you have a big VTL that amount of data should go directly to tape. We don't have LanFree license either, for a DB2 2.6TB database. We do 650G/h through LAN. How? You mentioned a GB NIC on the client. Our TSM server and client use 2 GB NICs simultaneously.

I don't remember well RMAN, but I know you can configure "channels" to stream data. That could help. Make sure also that channels are properly configured with relation to your disks (i.e. one channel per LUN / Array, depending on your disk config and HW) so they can provide enough throughput to tapes.
