    Default Destroyed tapes

    hi friends

how to delete the entries for the damaged tapes from the server.

can anyone please tell me the steps to update the tapes to the 'status=destroyed' .

    i know the command

    update vol axxxxxl3 status=destroyed

but do i need to vary this volume offline before updating its status?

    please help.

    regards

You can set it's status to destroyed or unavailable or available as needed without any other requirements. The tape will still remain in TSM's inventory with that status. If you have a known damaged tape that data cannot be recovered from, then you'll need to do a "del vol axxxxxl3 discarddata=yes" to actually remove that data from TSM. Check with your legal dept on rules for that though, many times it's better from a legal perspective to keep the damaged tape and it's unrecoverable data in TSM. If required, it's better to say we "have" the data, we just can't "access" it due to damaged media than it is to say "tape was damaged so we deleted the data".

Once you've updated the volume to 'dest', try running:

    restore stg <storage_pool_name>

for the storage pool that the volume belongs to. That will attempt to restore files on any volume marked 'destroyed' or files marked with errors from copy tapes.

Before updating a volume to destroy status, might want to do a restore, the process will automatically update the volume to destroy status. More information in the thread below:
