I don't think you can backup just an individual mailbox. There is support for restoring just a single one, but that's from a backup of the entire message store.

It's not a TSM thing, it's what Exchange is capable of presenting to the backup application. I believe, however, that FastBack found some way around this.

Individual mail boxes can now be backed up using TSM 6.1. Check out the new release teaser:

I figure they must be by-passing Exchange's native backup strategies, which could mean that it is sensitive to Exchange versions/patches.

Something to investigate before implementing!

Hi,
TSM fast back has the ability to backup/restore individual mail box including drafts, calender etc...
TSM v6.1 also has the ability to backup individual mail box in an exchange server.
All that I want is, does TDP v5.4 has the ability to backup/restore individual mail box?
I would also like to add an additional question regards to the same...
I found the details of the first storage group and its corresponding mailbox store sits in the path as mentioned below
First storage Group properties :
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata
Mail Box store exchange database properties :
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb
Mail box store exchange streming database properties :
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.stm
User Mail box folder:
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata
Irrespective of the same,
(1) When I take full backup of the First storage group, does it will take entire directory including the database files and its user mail box folder?
(2) Do I need to have priv1.edb and priv1.stm in the respective path so as to restore entire first storage group?
(3)I want to know, which are all the files it gets actually backed up ?
And also I want to know which are all the files will it gets restored?
(4) For restoring entire first storage group , what are all the pre-requisites should be checked and need to be present?
(5) How to restore individual mail box using TDP v5.4?
Bcoz whn I did sample restore of the entire first storage group by deleting the "mdbdata" directory, I'm unable to restore it back and pops up message as " the FBSG7364E the following repository share problem were detected: FBSG1338I the following repository cannot be shared"
"FBSG7355E the specified location is an empty path" and so on...

I have to answer this from memory, but backups are for the entire storage group. (A differential backup takes the transaction logs.) You have to restore the entire storage group to a separate location or group (depending in the version of Exchange) and then copy the mailbox you want over to production.
You need full system and Exchange priviledges.Daniel R. Giles

I am not aware of the fact that TSM6.1 can backup individual mailbox. I Have it in test env, and I know it can restore individual mailbox, but out of mailbox store backup.
Also, using TDP for exchange you are not backing up files, but database, trough API

If you dont want to hassle with Brick-Level backups you can use Lucid8's DigiScope to extract granual information from any Backup/Offline Copy of an Exchange Database, i.e. Raw EDB, STM and Log set. Check out http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp Project Based licenses are available at very reasonable rates as well.
