NDMP incremental backup of N-series and Netapp?
Hello,
does anyone know if it will be possible in future releases to do incremental backups over NDMP? This would be very interesting for us.
Our main windows shares from N-Series storage and Netapp filer are getting to big to do a backup with a tsmclient backing up the data over a network share. This is taking too long. We only have 24h to do this and the cifs protocol is very slow finding out file changing dates. Also the tsmclient process is growing to big while creating the filelist (> 2GB). We had to activate the diskcache for this and this also slows it down a lot.
I saw incremental backups over ndmp running on another backup software and this looked very nice. At the moment we do a monthly full backup and daily differentials but this is growing very big and very ugly to handle. It would be great to also have the NDMP file lists in the database and not in the toc-pool.
In case someone of Tivoli is going to read this : Please! We need this functionality and this is very urgent!!! I'm going to send you some chocolate if you would implement this! So please!!!

we curently have the n5200. we are using a windows proxy server to scan for changes and do incremental backups. this takes forever and would like to eliminate the proxy server.

The NDMP protocol itself doesn't provide for incrementals in current version. I'm aware of EMC actually adding an extension to the protocol to do incrementals (they call it NDMP level 10). Current formal NDMP has level 0 (full) and level 1-9 are for up to 9 diff's before another full is required. I don't know if EMC has submitted their extension to the NDMP control body for inclusion in a future version of the formal spec. Check www.ndmp.org for details on the spec.
