ADIC/Quantum i2000 Auto Cleaning

Does anyone have any recommendations (or warnings!) for using, or not using, the Auto Tape Drive Cleaning feature, on ADIC/Quantum i2000 tape libraries with TSM? Are there any potential problems? We have a number of them, and currently, we are set up (WITHIN TSM,) to clean the drives after every 1TB of activity per drive. We have IBM LTO2 drives in these machines, and according to IBM, these drives do not support the ASNEEDED setting for TSM drive cleaning, so I am wanting to use the "automated" functions of the libraries to do this.

As near as I can tell, these i2K's do not auto eject the spent cleaning tapes, after they are used up, so keeping track of their status is a manual process. Is this correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not only did this thread tickle my amusement - (I gave out a loud laugh in the office)

I had to reply 10 years later.

I am the other person that also has to look after ADIC /Scalar I-2000 - and a number of them.
They must have been on 'Special offer' somewhere at some point???

The auto - clean facility is about as bizzare as you will get. The Operator's console is as antiquated as it gets, and looks like the hired a bunch of 2 year ols from the local school to design the operators console.

I happen to be a big fan of the QTM Libraries and auto clean can work if your lib and drive firmwares are up to date.
Place a call with your local support team to get it configured.

1 Slot will be dedicated for it and when cleaning is required the library takes care of itself outside the worry of TSM and your up keep.
