You should be able to use 6.3.x clients with TSM 5.5 (We had been for a while) and according to IBM win 2012 is supported.
Unfortunately we have a response from IBM, that confirmed my 'talked about in hushed tones' theory.

Also be aware that the drivers (assuming a windows environment) may have issues with firmware on different drives.
So it pays to do a single drive or two at a time (depending on the library size)...

A further update on this IBM advised to upgrade LTO4 firmware - which has now been upgraded.
The timeouts on the driver still occur but TSMDLST is responsive.
