Hi all,

We are backing up a share as an example:

\\share\files\

The domain statement is simple:

DOMAIN "\\share\files"
We tried using memoryefficient yes, but, doesn't seem to help.

This share contains 3 million objects (and is expected to grow). We find that in the dsmsched.log, it shows the last line at 1.3 million files, but, no activity commences. When doing a q se, you see the session, with an idlew of 0 seconds.

I find that this happens during a manual backup as well. The server is a physical machine, 64 bit windows with 4 cores and 26GB of ram. network, cpu, and memory all look very good during the backup. Nothing appears in dsierror or ac log.

Any suggestions?

Compression - RMAN vs TSM vs Tape Drive

Has anyone done any analysis on compression rates? We compress at the tape drive level as most do, and have several Oracle DBs that backup LAN-Free. For Oracle data that backs up to disk (smaller DBs and archive logs) we compress at the TSM client level.

Oracle can do the compression with the following command:
BACKUP AS COMPRESSED BACKUPSET DATABASE

For LAN-Free, the tape drive would not compress further if the client is doing it, but how does RMAN compression compare with tape drive compression? (LTO-4)

For our smaller DBs and archive logs going over the LAN to disk, how does RMAN compression compare to TSM client compression?

If there is a way to do it, a useful feature would be an inclexcl option to allow files on a path and directories on the same path to go to different storage pools. Similar to what we now have as DIRMC, but that can be applied to specific data.

Example:
A client with a 35 day overall retention.
A specific path on that client requires 1 year retention (or whatever.)
Currently DIRMC applies to the entire client data. If DIRMC is not used, the management class with longest RETAINONLY applies, but to the entire client.

It would be nice to have an inclexcl option which would allow something like this:
include /path_to_data_A/ mc_data
include.dirsonly /path_to_data_A/ mc_dir

Same data path, but files and directories treated differently, at a more granular level than DIRMC.

Some environments may not get involved in archiving, choosing instead to simply retain data as backup. This would be of assistance to that environment.

Hello all, I have this script that is working except that in the hours, minutes and seconds fields when any of them have a leading zero the zero gets dropped. For instance: if a session has been running for 12 minutes and 7 seconds the output will display 0:12:7 instead of 00:12:07. A trailing zero is ok. Those get displayed. I suspect I have to do something with the decimal(2) but not sure what that might be yet so I thought I'd ask the experts.

I have a sequential file pool 'DIR_BAK_E_F' used just for DIR_MC objects and it rapidly ran out of scratch volumes.

Upon inspection I noticed that the volumes were not reaching their maximum capacity, before being 100% full and a new file volume was created. I inspected the file system and the files appear to be created to the correct size of the device class, but query volume shows that these volumes are full with hardly no utilisation. I then moved the data from one of those FULL volumes and the process completes showing only around 12MB copied.
Any idea's why the volumes aren't storing the maximum amount of data as defined by the device class?
currently we are using to take oracle 9i and 10g lanfree with following configuration:
TDP for oracle 5.4.1.
tsm ba client version 5.5.0
SAN agent 5.5.7.
Atape Driver:12.6.0.0
Library:ts3310

on tsm 5.5 with the same config dsmj and everyting was working fine but now after upgrade i can able to
run backup throguh cmd line but not able to open through dsmj and web.

Dsmj Gui Error: ANS5179E TSM is unable to continue.Existing program.

output of dsmjlog
aixserver:/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin>cat dsmj.log
IMBase (Constructor): dsmagent exited with code: 255

if i run dsmagent on my aix client, iam getting below message:

aixserver::/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin>dsmagent
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program dsmagent because of the following errors:
0509-150 Dependent module libxmlutil-5.5.3.0.a could not be loaded.
0509-022 Cannot load module libxmlutil-5.5.3.0.a.
0509-026 System error: A file or directory in the path name does not exist.

i checked but bit confuse about version compatibility of tdp , ba client support to server 6.3.3.
i need to upgrade my tdp client but need to confirm that which new tdp oracle version will support 9i and 10g with TSM Server 6.3.3 and which ba client?

pls reply.

Hi Admins,

I have a requirement to test our old archives stored in Tapes for the purpose of Internal Audit. Below is my requirement.

Archive date - older than 15.01.2012 (or say between 01.01.2011 and 15.01.2012)
Nodename - ABC
Folder to retrieve - /b01 (almost 500gb of data)
stg pool=MONTHLY_COPY_POOL

The Tapes are stored in a remote location. I would need a command to identify the list of tapes required, specific to this retrieve. I have tried the below commands already.

select distinct volume_name from contents a, backups b where a.node_name='ABC' and a.object_id=b.object_id and backup_date<'01.01.2012' and stg=MONTHLY_COPY_POOL

q nodedata ABC stg='MONTHLY_COPY_POOL'

select distinct volume_name from volumeusage where node_name='ABC' and stgpool_name='MONTHLY_COPY_POOL' (or)

Expecting a simple and strong command to identify the tape list.

Hello everyone,

First time posting here since I couldn't find what I'm looking for using the search tool.
Not sure if what I'm trying to do is possible w/ TSM, but it couldn't hurt to ask, right? ;)

The situation is the following; we have a lot of decentralized TSM servers and I would like to accomplish having 4 full DB backups on the decentralized server and 1 full weekly (on saturday) DB backup of every decentralized server at our main office. Since I want to automate the whole process, I make sure that TSM deletes all the (expired) DB backup files (volumes) on disk.

The following commands are part of the maintenance script running on the decentralized servers:

//Create full DB backup on disk @decentralized server and on disk @centralized server
backup db devclass=FILEDB type=FULL wait=yes
backup db devclass=OFFDB type=FULL wait=yes

//Deleting DB backup volumes
set drmdbbackupexpiredays 4
set drmfileprocess yes
move drmedia * source=dbbackup enddate=today-4 wherestate=mountable tostate=vault
move drmedia * source=dbbackup wherestate=vaultretrieve tostate=onsiteretrieve

The result of this is that I'm having the 4 full DB backups on the decentralized server, but that it's only keeping them for 4 days on my centralized server. The DB backups on the centralized server needs to be kept for a whole week (until the next backup is taken)

My question is, is it possible to set a different expiration "policy" on a db backup depending on where they are stored? Or is there another way to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Thx in advance for your answers! :)

we defined a new Policy domain and Management Class on our TSM-Server (linux) and then we assigned it to a host. But when i run a backup via command line on this host, the backupfiles stored by the default mgmt class. Did we miss somthing in the configuration and how we can backup to this new mgmtclass from commandline?
Many thanks in advance!

OK,

I'm in the process of building a few TSM 6.3.3 servers on AIX 7.1.

My first instance works perfectly, but the second instance won't backup the database when dsmserv has been automatically started after a system reboot. I get the following error: ANR2981E Database backup terminated due to environment or setup issue related to file access - DB2 sqlcode -2033 sqlerrmc 106

I'm pretty sure this is just a simple file security/pathing problem, so I've tried everything I can think of regarding environment variable, file/folder ownership, deleting the tsmdbmgr.log file, reseting the dsmapipw password (multiple times) and examining the necesarry option file stanza's for any sneaky typo's...

But wait, here's the kicker... If I halt the server, login with account 'tsminst1' and make sure I'm in the instance folder /home/tsminst1/tsminst1 , I can run '/opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmerv -q' then issue a backup db command via a dsmadmc console and it all works fine. If I then halt the server again, reboot and let the /etc/inittab run the dsmserv process, it fails.

The /etc/inittab file has the following line in it:
tsminst1:2:once:/opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/rc.dsmserv -u tsminst1 -i /home/tsminst1/tsminst1 -q >/dev/console 2>&1

Any help would be much appreciated as I've got another two instances I need to build asap.

I can't remember something. If I delete the journal and start new, and I stop the backup after a few hours, is my new journal partially built? So I can backup again later and build more, and do this several times?
Or MUST I run a backup from start to finish to populate the journal? (this will literally take days and tax my TSM server greatly)
