I am trying to find out what domains (management classes) are associated with files from the server side. I am exporting and importing files from server to server. I want to see if the files get the correct MC as I am concerned they may get STANDARD.

Also, is it possible to update a domain (MC) from the SQL side of things on the server?

We currently use the TSM storage agents for about a dozen servers. Were in the process of setting up a new TS3500 library, and we're going with the Shared Library option using one TSM server as the library manager, and the other TSM servers as library clients.

It occurred too me that the lan-free clients will also need access to the ts3500 drives. Will a shared library option on a TSM Library CLIENT pass-though a mount request from a storage agent? The storage agents will not be able to communicate with the Library master. The networks don't talk.

i.e The storage Agent requests a mount to TSM server, which in turn requests the library manager to mount a volume. Since the path of the storage agent is defined at the TSM server level, will this work or will it need direct access to the Library manager?

Also, is there a way to limit specific drives to storage agents ONLY, meaning NOT be used by the TSM servers at all within the same library and device class. Would setting up a path for the storage agent, and not the TSM server, suffice?

At one point we had two copy pools in place, the last TSM admin was suppose to remove one of them due to the fact we were just going thru tapes too fast and so that was the end result.
Now I'm not sure is it was done or not.
Am I right to assume "DISK" is a primary pool and "TAPE" is the copy pool.
And PC1 is primary and TP1 is a copy pool.
Is there any other commands to show a better relation, just learning...thanks!!

All,
I have the 6.2 client which has the capability of running a Live .vhd backup of of a virtual machine in Hyper-V. One of my VM's runs SQL. I don't believe SQL services need to be stopped before taking the backup because the TSM client is running on the Virtual Host server and not the VM itself. TSM Hyper V backup uses VSS, so, the server can be up and running taking a live backup withouht shutting down the VM. Our Sql Dba disagrees and doesn't understand how this can be accomplished without stopping SQL services. Is there any documentation pertaining to this? I need to provide something to put his mind at ease.

Hi All

I'm trying to duplicate a production database to a new testserver.
rman backup using tsm 5.5, oracle 10.2.0.2/Windows 2003

When starting the duplicate controlfiles are restored and some datafiles
(system, users, undo). It seems when we try to restore datafiles for the application tablespace
we get the error. we have many datafiles with size 4Gb.

The error stack looks like this
channel t1: starting datafile backupset restore
channel t1: specifying datafile(s) to restore from backup set
restoring datafile 00020 to F:\ORADATA\DWDEV\AP2DATA14.DBF
channel t1: reading from backup piece DB_8almouc9_58634
ORA-19870: error reading backup piece DB_8almouc9_58634
ORA-19507: failed to retrieve sequential file, handle="DB_8almouc9_58634", parms=""
ORA-27029: skgfrtrv: sbtrestore returned error
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
ANU2614E Invalid sequence of function calls to Data Protection for Oracle

Any ideas why I see this ?

Appreciate your comments

Hi Guys,

Few questions on these as I'm trying to fully understand these processes in TSM.

1. Is it possible to know on how many tapes will be reclaimed?

2. On the output below how will I know on how much data is the tape reclaiming or transferring to the other tape?

Process Process Description Status
Number
-------- -------------------- -------------------------------------------------
3,049 Space Reclamation Volume P40287 (storage pool ADRTDB_TAPE), Moved
Files: 377, Moved Bytes: 202,176,528,352,
Unreadable Files: 0, Unreadable Bytes: 0.
Current Physical File (bytes): 204,922,118
Current input volume: P40287. Current output
volume: P40264.

3. On migration, how will I know on how much data it needs to migrate from the storage pool to tape?

4. I have VTL which is my storage pool then ot gets migrated to tapes, how will I know if all the data has been migrated to tapes? or how much data has been migrated? What if there are still data in my VTL and migration has been cutoff because of the next backup schedule, does the data in my VTL will be continue to be migrated the next migration schedule?

5. Is there a log that I can see on how long my space reclamation and migration takes place?

Sorry for so many questions, I don't have anyone to ask and I'm still learning :( and trying my best...

Thanks a lot for your responses on my questions... Cheers all!
I have a server that suddenly jumped capacity considerably and I am suspecting that the sys admin changed permissions and TSM is now creating duplicate data. Please advise.

thanks, look forward to your responses.

Hi folks.

I am setting up DEDUP for my TSM 6.2 installation. I've created my primary disk pools to handle the daily backups which are then migrated to a sequential disk pool of type "file". Now my understanding is that a dedup or reclaim process will not happen until i've issued a backup stgpool of that dedup pool onto another storage pool...

Is that correct? if that is the case, when i issue the backup stgpool on the dedup pool, it will copy all non-dedup data to the copy pool. then the dedup process and reclaim will be able to run properly?

If that is the case, then that COPY Pool will get HUGE depending on the retention...So why dedup at all then? In my mind, i am using dedup to save space. What i'm i not understanding correctly?

Thanks.

I am currently getting about 10MB per hour throughput to my LTO4 tapes.

This is a new installation and I am new to TSM. I have read the online help pages as much as I can and still can not track down what is causing my problem.

System:
Windows 2008 Server x64 with latest service packs and updates rome Microsoft.
Server is a Dell Power Edge R510 with
500GB C: drive
500GB D: Drive
6.0TB E: Drive

OS is on C:
Database and Active Log on D:
Disk Dev, File Dev, Active Mirror, Primary and Secondary Archive are all on E:

Server has 16GB ram
2 E5620 Quad Core Xeon processors with hyper-threading turned off. (8 CPU show in the task monitor)
SCSI Ultra320 connected LTO4 24tape library (x2)

I can archive over 1TB per day but when I run >backup stg File1 LTOCopy1 it takes 12-24h to copy over ~1GB

The server has nothing else running on it at the time. The CPU load is an average of 25% with each CPU going 100% for 1-10 sec then dropping and the next CPU picking it up.
Used memory is 6.64GB and steady.

The total data in the FILE1 storage pool is about 500GB

The Database is only about 3GB and backed up every night.

>q db f=d
Database Name: TSMDB1
Total Size of File System (MB): 476,286
Space Used by Database(MB): 3,616
Free Space Available (MB): 437,961
Total Pages: 312,324
Usable Pages: 312,188
Used Pages: 305,060
Free Pages: 7,128
Buffer Pool Hit Ratio: 100.0
Total Buffer Requests: 219,045,827,798
Sort Overflows: 0
Lock Escalation: 0
Package Cache Hit Ratio: 99.8
Last Database Reorganization:
Full Device Class Name: LTOCLASS1
Incrementals Since Last Full: 0
Last Complete Backup Date/Time: 09/01/2010 06:00:06

The Total Buffer Request number is climbing at a rate of ~2 million per second. (This can't be good can it?)

Any Idea what I have configured incorrectly that would have caused this?
Everything seems configured according to IBM specifications, but somewhere I must have missed something.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hoping someone can help me out here...

I am trying/testing TSM upgrade. I have a new server installed (w2k8 x64 R2) and it is connected to a VTL emulating a 3584 with 3592J1A drives.

Initially, i had serious problems getting TSM to be able to create paths to the drives, even though the OS could see them.
I tore down the configuration and started from scratch. I have installed the IBM 6.2.0.9 Windows 3592 Tape Driver and Media changer drivers, which i installed using the NON-EXCLUSIVE (can someone tell me what the diff is between exclusive and non-exclusive?)
I then installed TSM 5.5 with the Device Driver, then upgraded to 5.5.4.3(installed the TSM device driver in the setup)

I then was able to create drives as 3592 drives and paths inside TSM (using mtx.x.x.x devices), after creating the paths, it showed the drives as read/write formats as 3592,3592C, which is correct, when i launch the TSM management console, under Device Driver, it shows the TSM Device type as 3592.
Everything worked perfectly.

I then went through the TSM 6.2. upgrade, installed 6.2 base, licenses and selected device driver, but choose not to install it, only the tools. went through after that and installed 6.2.1.1, same as 6.2.
Upgrade was successful, i was able to launch TSM, audit the library, see the drives etc. the only oddity was the scratch tape labels could not be read. i ended up just checkin them out, deleting them from the VTL, and creating new tapes, labeling and checkin them in and they were readable.
I was able to do backups, restores, create new drives and paths.. no problems. Drives inside TSM shows the same, read/write formats as 3592,3592C

Now, when i launch the TSM management console, click on TSM Device Driver, Device Information, i see the tapes, the device name as \\.\TapeX, the TSM Name as mt.x.x.x.x (which is what i used to create the paths), the problem is the TSM Device Type is showing as GENERICTAPE instead of 3592 (which it showed in the 5.5.4.3 on the same system)

I do not know what this means, or if it is going to cause me any issues further down the line when i go to upgrade the Production TSM servers...

Any help would be appreciated, i am at my wits end here, i have a PMR opened with IBM, but i am reaching out to as many people as i can to find out what is happening...

thanks in advance, let me know if more info is needed

Hi.

We were discussing possible security issues, and then we thought about the TSM feature which allows a schedule to execute a command on a client node. This seems like a very big security risk. In the case that the TSM server got hacked, the attacker could create a schedule to run any command he likes on any node system he likes, right? Is there some way to limit the allowed commands on the client side? We only use commands for TDP schedules, so it could be blocked totally in most cases.
Has anyone else considered this, and come to any conclusions regarding how to limit the risk?
